How reliable is the average?
Reliable enough to buy a gift that can be resized, and not reliable enough for anything else. Ring size correlates loosely with height and build, but the spread is wide: two women of identical height can easily differ by two full sizes. Buying on the average alone gives you somewhere around a one in three chance of a correct fit.
Fingers also change over time. Ring size tends to increase gradually with age, and fluctuates with temperature, salt intake, exercise, pregnancy and time of day. A finger measured on a cold morning can read a full half size smaller than the same finger measured that evening.
How to find her ring size without asking
- Borrow a ring she already wears. Take one from the correct finger — usually the fourth finger of the left hand — and measure its inner diameter with the screen sizer. It takes under a minute and the ring goes straight back.
- Trace the inside of a ring. If you cannot take the ring with you, place it on paper and draw carefully around the inner edge, then measure that circle later.
- Ask someone with similar hands. A close friend or sister can often try one of her rings on without raising suspicion.
- Buy with free resizing. If you have to guess, order a size 6 or 7 from a jeweller who resizes free within the first year. Most solitaire settings resize comfortably by one or two sizes.
Remember the band width
Most women's rings are 2 mm to 4 mm wide, which needs no adjustment. If you are buying a wider band, or a stacked set that will be worn together as a single unit, add half a size. An eternity band with stones all the way around also fits slightly tighter than a plain band of the same size.
